The Motsepe Foundation sponsors the ABC Motsepe leagues as part of its contribution towards amateur football, in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA). The main objective of the contribution is to drive football development at the lower levels of the community and ensure growth of football in South Africa. This will ensure that young stars receive an opportunity to showcase their talent and enter a professional league.
The league is named after the late father of Mr Patrice Motsepe, Mr ABC Motsepe. This is in recognition of the legacy of Mr Motsepe Senior, who was an educator, a school principal who was committed to the growth and development of the youth, an entrepreneur, a visionary and a philanthropist in his own right. As a school principal, he was renowned for ensuring that even students who were turned down by other institutions were admitted and educated, and he stressed the need for students to be innovative and passionate about whatever they did.
