Female children are often faced with many challenges that deter them from advancing and grabbing the opportunities made available to them. Sport is one of the ways of providing the much-needed space, support and security for each girl. Generally, female sport does not receive much attention from the private sector for developmental purposes, therefore the Kay Motsepe Schools Netball Cup provides an opportunity for girls under the age of 15 to explore this opportunity to participate in organized sport.
The under 15 netball tournaments started on a very high note with over 5 500 schools registering their teams to participate in 2016.That translated to more than 66 000 young girls participating in this tournament throughout the country. The 3 teams that won the National tournament were presented with an opportunity to take part in the International under 15 tournaments in Singapore. One of the 3 teams were from the development team, from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Department of Basic Education and South African Schools Netball have dedicated their time to ensure a seamless delivery of the tournament throughout the country. Massive parental support has been observed in all the provincial competitions, which is very encouraging as there is a great need for parents to encourage and support their children when they are involved in these activities. The Motsepe Foundation remains committed to supporting and growing this tournament each year.
The Motsepe Foundation’s sponsorship ensures that sports, especially girls’ participation in sports, is encouraged and supported, so that young girls can excel in sport and in class and become roles models in the communities they are from.
